Mark Denavit, student on NEESR-II project, wins ACEC Scholarship
Mark Denavit received the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Illinois' Frank H. Gorham ACEC-Illinois State Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic excellence. Mark is an M.S./Ph.D. candidate working with Prof. Jerome Hajjar on the NEESR project entitled System Behavior Factors for Composite and Mixed Structural Systems, conducted in conjunction with researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Mark's research is focusing on developing new computational formulations for simulating the nonlinear response of composite members subjected to extreme loadings as part of complete three-dimensional composite frames. These formulations are being validated against full-scale tests being conducted on the project at the MAST Laboratory at the University of Minnesota to fill in gaps in the range of attributes of composite beam-columns that have been tested in the past. His work will culminate by formulating new design provisions for the AISC non-seismic and seismic specifications.
